4 Christian Responses to the Biggest Questions in ‘Disclosure Day’

Steven Spielberg has a new alien-themed film, and it’s unlike anything he’s brought to the big screen since he released Close Encounters of the Third Kind some five decades ago. That award-winning film told the story of an ordinary man whose life is transformed after a mysterious encounter with a UFO, leading him on a quest to uncover the truth about extraterrestrial visitors – as the U.S. government tries its best to uncover the truth. In Disclosure Day (PG-13), though, the government already knows the truth. The film imagines a world in which U.S. officials, working alongside a powerful private organization known as Wardex, have concealed evidence of extraterrestrial contact since the 1970s, maintaining a decades-long cover-up that spans multiple administrations and – presumably – thousands of insiders. That’s a markedly different premise from Spielberg’s other alien-themed films, including E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – stories in which governments and ordinary citizens alike were learning the truth, not hiding it.The film also ventures into deeper questions about faith and humanity’s place in the cosmos.A former Catholic nun plays a central role in the story, wrestling with the implications of the revelations as she – to Spielberg’s credit – maintains her faith. In the closing moments, a television news host suggests that the disclosure of alien life raises profound questions about “the nature of who we are” and “what our place is” in the universe. The film’s plot follows several unlikely figures – including a whistleblower and a meteorologist – whose lives intersect as the truth about extraterrestrial visitors begins to surface.Spielberg’s fascination with alien life extends beyond the screen. In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, he said he believes that extraterrestrial life has already visited Earth – and is still here.No doubt, the combination of a blockbuster film about a decades-long alien cover-up and a director who has publicly speculated about extraterrestrial life – coupled with ongoing reports of unexplained aerial phenomena – will spark discussion among Christians and skeptics alike. These are not new questions for Christianity, which has wrestled with them for centuries. Here are four Christian responses to the questions the film raises:Photo Credit: ©Universal
